On March 2, the flame Lighting ceremony for the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games was held at the Badaling section of the Great Wall. The first torchbearer（火炬手)is the first Chinese double amputee（被截肢者)to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma,73-year-old Xia Boyu,who is now a member of the Chinese Mountaineering Association.
On that morning, after the ceremony, Xia Boyu joined in the torch relay(接力） as the first One. Wearing a suit and holding the torch, he ran about 100 m before passing the flame to the second one and successfully finished the torch relay. Xia said.“The Badaling Great Wall is the highest point of the torch relay and I am honored to be here for it.”Xia also added he hoped the Beijing Winter Paralympics would promote ice and snow sports for the disabled in China and that Chinese ice and snow athletes would achieve excellent results in the Games.
Xia Boyu was born in 1949 in Linjiangmen. Chongqing. Xia has said again and again that the“yu"in his name means Chongqing. He succeeded in climbing Mount Qomolangma mainly because he has the indomitable(堅韌的）character of Chongqing people.
In 1975, Xia Boyu climbed Mount Qomolangma for the first time.Hislower parts of the legs were badly hurt due to the cold weather and had to be cut off after he gave his sleeping bag to a Tibetan teammate who had lost his equipment(裝備).After that,he continued to push the limits and finally reached the top on May 14. 2018,becoming the world's oldest double amputee climber to conquer the world's highest mountain.
